eBay listings with variations: which option sells
A listing can sell options such as color and size together, but most sales often come from a few of them. The rules for listings with variations, and how to look at the option that sells when you research.
T-shirts, phone cases, shoes: the different colors and sizes of one product can sell on eBay in a single listing, as variations. The buyer picks the option on the listing and the seller manages one listing. When you research, keep this in mind: a listing's total sales don't mean every option sells at the same rate.
The rules
- A listing can have up to 250 variations.
- Variations are set apart by up to 5 details, such as color, size and material.
- Each variation has its own price, quantity and an optional SKU.
- Pictures vary by a single detail, most often color. Each option's picture set can hold as many pictures as a listing is allowed.
- Variations can be used only in fixed-price listings and in categories that support them.
These limits are from eBay's developer documentation (Trading API, read on 5 October 2026).
Which option sells
The sales count of a listing with variations is the total of all its options. The same listing can carry a small black and a large pink, and most of the sales can come from a few options. When you source and hold stock, look at the option that sells, not the listing's total.
- Read sales by option: one listing's sales can gather in a few options.
- Drop the options that don't sell from your sourcing list; holding every option in stock ties up capital.
- Price by option: a large size or a different material is a different cost.
In SellerLibrary
When the option of an Amazon source changes, Source tracking notices it and says so in the listing's window; you link again to the right option. Amazon matching looks for the right option of the same product and marks a color or size difference separately.
In a listing with variations, item specifics still feed the filters: see the item specifics post.
