eBay VeRO: what to know before a listing is removed
What eBay's VeRO program is, why a listing is removed and what to do when it is. Four checks to make before publishing, from the rules eBay publishes itself.
VeRO (Verified Rights Owner) is the program through which trademark and copyright owners report eBay listings they believe infringe their rights. A listing found to infringe is removed, and the seller is told why. Repeated violations bring consequences up to permanent suspension, which is why the check happens before publishing.
How does VeRO work?
The program is open only to rights owners and their authorized representatives. A rights owner reports a listing; if it infringes, it is removed. The notice the seller receives says why the listing was removed, which part of it may have infringed and how to reach the rights owner.

Four checks before publishing
- Is the item genuine? eBay does not allow counterfeits, fakes, replicas or dupes.
- Is the brand in the right place? If the item is not made by that brand, the brand name is not used as if it were; for a compatible part, words like "compatible with" or "fits" come before the brand.
- Whose pictures and text are they? eBay does not accept pictures or text copied from other websites or internet searches; photos, videos and descriptions must be yours or used with permission.
- Can it be sold in this market? Some items are made to be sold only in certain countries; check the manufacturer's terms.
What to do if a listing is removed
You can write to the rights owner directly with the details in the notice: include your eBay user ID, your email address and the numbers of the removed listings. If the rights owner agrees they made a mistake, they retract the report. For copyright reports in the US, eBay accepts a counter notice under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
Relisting the same listing unchanged is not the answer: according to eBay, repeated violations bring escalating consequences. First read in the notice what got the listing removed, then fix that part or decide not to sell the item.
Where SellerLibrary helps
The Listing Studio runs brand and VeRO checks before publishing; a risky listing does not go to eBay and says why, by name. The check does not guarantee that a listing follows the rules; the last decision and the responsibility stay with the seller. For the sourcing rule, see the drop shipping post.
Common questions
Where is the VeRO list?
eBay publishes participant pages written by some of the rights owners in the program; each says which rights that brand protects. Not every rights owner has one, and a missing page does not mean the brand is unprotected.
Will one VeRO report close my account?
Under the rule eBay publishes, a listing found to infringe is removed; repeated violations bring escalating consequences, from selling restrictions to permanent suspension.
What if the rights owner made a mistake?
Write to the rights owner with the contact details in the notice, including your eBay user ID, email and the listing numbers. If they agree it was a mistake, they retract the report.
